Ontario Cup 2010

Postby Dudley on Sun Apr 18, 2010 3:46 pm

Come on folks the draw has been up for an hour an no one has posted!

Oh well lets see.

Nepean playing in Ottawa advances against Saltfleet, Etobicoke and the Ottawa Royals

They will play the winner of:
Oakville A
Burlington
Bradford
Whitby & innsifill.

If Burlington and Oakville tie this group could get nasty. Toss of the coin as the two traditional rivals face off but I am calling Nepean and Burlington for the quarter final

The winner of that game will meet the winner of the
Brams B
Ajax
Vaughan
Pickering
Oshawa Turul, group who goes straight to the semi final. I think that should be Pickering.

On the other side of the draw

Windsor
UMSC
North London
Oakville B
I will call North London sight unseen to advance tot he quarter where they will play

The winner of the
Brams
Kitchener
Mississauga
Aurora
Richmond Hill

I think this should be Brams
The winner of the Brams North London Quarter will face the winner of the

Newmarket
Erin Mills
Woodbridge
Hearts
Waterloo

group who goes straight to the sem final
No surprises who I am calling in this group.

Wow some shocking predictions nutz :o I guess you must know more about Oakville B then I.
Nice to see some bold predictions but....

A shame to see the numbers dwindling like they have been-only 28 teams down from 8 groups and 35 teams last year
I guess the teams below L3/Elite see their chances to win the OC as virtually non-existant and don't want to waste the entry fee and gas.
But a few big names are missing namely Gloucester, London Southend Jags and NF. They certainly have the game to compete-what gives
Also I thought Sudbury was supposed to host but they didn't even enter :o

As for my thoughts:

Group 1
A fairly soft group and home cooking should allow the Hotspurs Lightning to advance to the quarters with little effort

Group 2
By last years rankings the easiest group, but although I like the Meteors/Galaxy group from N. London I think Unionville and Windsor will push them a bit esp. UMSC

Group 3
Battle of the Titans and old Rivals as Oakville and Burlington square off. With all of the player movement between the two squads I want a front row seat for this one. The Heat in a squeaker but a draw in this one wouldn't surprise.Whitby and Brantford are tough too but the Stampeders in over their heads I presume.

Group 4
The toughest group of them all by far. For once the Lasers will have to work hard to escape the first round and likely will just because they always find a way to win. Waterloo is an excellent well balanced team that will give the others fits, and EM is talented and improved every year the past 3 seasons and won the West to everyone's shock last season. NYH are a scrappy bunch and can steal some points. Woodbridge drew the wrong group

Group 5
Another difficult group with no weak sisters here. Pickering has made a lot of changes for them and should prevail but Ajax will give their neighbors a tussle. The Twisters are always a handful and Vaughan is tough defensively but neither can score enough to advance and the Turul are up and coming a squad to watch.
Why is Port Perry hosting? anyways

Group 6
The Bullets should prevail rather easily with all of their injured players back and the winter rebuild complete.

Good luck to all.

I would assume nutz is either from the coaching staff or parental unit of the team. If they truly are worthy of factoring in this year's cup  whoever nutz is just completely blew it for their team if they were hoping to sneak up on anyone, a factor lower ranked sides usually need for any much needed luck early on. What an odd post.

Newmarket/Pickering final for me. Not sure any other teams will stack up to them as usual.

My wildcards... maybe Brantford or Ajax. A fan of both.

To answer to "child" earlier question as to why the "Ontario Cup" is being played in Port Parry. Oshawa Turul is hosting this summer Ontario Cup and the DRSA is planning to move their location to Port Parry in the future. So the idea is for exposure. Personally, Port Parry is a great venue for the DRSA.

Hey Chid,
Just out of curiousity what do mean that North York is a scrappy bunch. Looking at the standings from last nights games the teams that were considered the underdogs held their own last night don't you think? I really was shocked to see that they tied against vaughan last night expected vaughan to get a good win.

Anyone know why Innisfil has withdrawn from the OC?

You might hear too many injuries , need time to heal or couldn't get enough call ups to have a strong bench . These are excuses not reasons .
Innisfil is at the bottom end of the standings in L 4 Prem with only 2 wins and 3 bad beats , the coaching staff finally came to their senses and realized that they are way over their heads in the O .Cup . To drop out of this high profile tournament and lets not forget " The Nationals " dosen't mean they are cowards , but they live to fight another battle .

First scores in from Newmarket.

Erin Mills dropped Woodbridge by a 7-1 score and Newmarket defeated NY Hearts a goal better at 7-0. While the scores are pretty much indicative of the gap between Level 3 and the OYSL the real story was yet another knee injury for an Erin Mills player in their game.

An unbelievable string of serious injuries is decimating the Erin Mills squad and I am sure the girls are begining to wonder "who's next?"

I was speaking to OV who was also wondering what was going on especially since the team underwent specific strength training this winter designed to prevent this type of injury.

Is "7" the magic #. Nepean Hotspurs 7 - Saltfleet 0

Should be a much tougher game this afternoon against Etobicoke.

EM 2 Waterloo 1 tough game but not as close as the score indicates. EM very wasteful with chances. :(
Nmkt up 2-0 midway through first half of fourth game. Up next Waterloo vs NYH

1st OYSL team falls. Etobicoke 3 - NHL 0. Etobicoke moves on with a win or tie tomorrow against Salt Fleet. If Salt Fleet wins they move on. We had many chances in the first half, at least 5 from within the box only to miss the net. Etobicoke goal keeper played a very good game as well stopping many, many dangerous crosses. Control on game was about 90 /10 in favour of NHL but .... could not find the net and Etobicoke managed to capitalize on 3 of the 5 or so chances that they had. Congrats to them; they really just wanted it more than we did.
